Communication:
Staying Connected and Involved

July 17 Meeting Recap

Our first Behavioral Targeting Standards Consortium general membership meeting was a great success! We had a good member turnout, and are eager to move forward towards achieving the consortium's goals.

For those who were unable to attend the meeting, we have provided a recap of the event below.

We briefly touched on the amazing growth in behavioral targeting. In fact, eMarketer predicts BT spend will reach $4.4 billion by 2012. With this rapid expansion and so many players now in the market, we realize there is more confusion then ever about what exactly behavioral targeting means.

As you know, the BTSC was established to help set standards for behavioral targeting and drive development of universal terms. We were excited to announce our advisory board on the call. Please visit the Meet the Advisory Board section to find out more about the ambassadors of BTSC.

In addition, we reviewed the BTSC mission, vision, and goals, as well as the timeline for establishing a common language. During the meeting, a few members asked if the BTSC is going to deal with privacy. We clarified that we are not including privacy issues as part of the BTSC charter as it is covered by the NAI and the IAB. Our goal is to focus on the business issues around behavioral targeting and developing a common language so everyone is one the same page.

The goal before our next meeting is to outline definitions for all forms of behavioral targeting, including the distinct contextual, geographic, and demographic targeting. We welcome your feedback! All members are encouraged to submit questions, suggestions, and ideas to info@btstandards.org.

Thus far, we have outlined two working groups the BT Best Practices Working Group and BT Evangelism Working Group. There will be more detailed information on both shortly. In the meantime, if you are interested in serving in one or both groups, please e-mail info@btstandards.org.
